IBUg (Industriebrachenumgestaltung);was founded in 2007 and is an annual international urban-art-festival with the objective to draw attention to old industrial buildings by enhancing them artistically. As part of this festival, SHIFT-X hosted a conference and panel discussion about "Arts and culture for revitalization of industrial brownfields - experiences in Saxony and suggestions from Europe".
Dust, dirt, danger - these are the typical connotations of former industrial plants. Demolishing and recycling are obvious solutions. The IBUg takes another path: The places where our parents or grandparents worked, rotten structures waiting to be burned or knocked down by somebody, can be reanimated and brought back to life as canvas for this young art form. The site-specific installations created by the IBUg artists reflect both upon the historic and the contemporary, interacting with long forgotten industrial architecture and reactivating life in lost places. This creatively engages the local population in re-examining themselves, their neighborhood and their urban heritage in a positive way, whilst also promoting the worldwide phenomenon that is urban culture.
